This article analyses the role of conceptual metaphor in representing the rupture with the homeland in the autobiographical writings of Russian-speaking authors exiled to the United States between the 1970s and the 1990s. It demonstrates how the experience of departure, perceived as an irreversible act, is structured by recurrent metaphorical patterns that give meaning to geographic and identity-based alienation. The study of the metaphor of exile as symbolic death in the works of Vassily Aksenov, Pavel Lembersky, and Vadim Mesyats unfolds through the imagery of a funeral rite: departure is depicted as a burial, where the absence of agency of the ‘deceased’ underscores the forced and definitive nature of the rupture, despite a marked ironic distance. In the works of Edward Limonov and Elena Litinskaya, departure is conceptualized as an escape. Through the imagery of fleeing, emigration is reimagined as a prison break and situates rupture within a perspective of liberation. Finally, the analysis of the border crossing in the work of Alexander Genis shows that it functions as a symbolic threshold between two worlds. Rupture here assumes spatial, existential, and metaphysical dimensions, articulating loss and reconstruction. Thus, the metaphors of death and escape transform an individual rupture into a poetics of exile shaped by collective memory and intertextuality.
